  1. Matt, I think you may have had too much time instead of too little. When I asked Joe Campbell about this, he told a story of a cop in Honolulu who risked his life in an instant, to save a stranger’s life. Campbell said that our instant reaction is to help–it’s an overlay of fear, worry, shyness that makes us hesitate. Ever since, I’ve used the example of the person right next to you on a city sidewalk starts to fall, what do you do? People respond that their hands go out immediately to stop the fall. But. If you see the person approaching you, half a block away, weaving, maybe ill, maybe drunk–what do you do? Avoid that person! Your mind with all its fears has prevailed over your instinctive reaction to help.
